About Bypoint

Our story

Bypoint was founded in 2020 by Joris Koops (29). Joris's grandmother was a very energetic woman and an avid cyclist. A fall from a close friend who didn't receive timely help fueled her fear of cycling. Shortly afterward, Joris spoke with a trauma surgeon about the same topic, and it was confirmed that they, too, were increasingly noticing cyclists receiving help (too) late after a cycling accident.

After introducing its fall detection system, Bypoint has evolved into "your partner in cycling safety," offering innovative products to enhance cycling safety. Read below to learn about Bypoint's journey, step by step.

How Joris came up with the idea

Bypoint was founded in 2020 by Joris Koops (29). Joris's grandmother was a very energetic woman and an avid cyclist. A fall from a close friend who didn't receive timely help fueled her fear of cycling. Shortly afterward, Joris spoke with a trauma surgeon about the same topic, and it was confirmed that they, too, were increasingly noticing cyclists receiving help (too) late after a cycling accident.

When he started looking into the matter, Joris noticed that many cyclists face similar situations. During the initial research phase, it quickly became clear that the number of accidents, specifically single-vehicle accidents, is rising dramatically, and that time plays a crucial role after a cycling accident.

Rabo Business Award

Joris submitted his idea for the 2020 Rabo Entrepreneurship Award, a competition organized by Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the University of Groningen, and Rabobank.

Joris was named the winner of the Rabo Entrepreneurship Award, beating out 79 other student entrepreneurs in the competition. He received the 2020 Entrepreneurship Award for his entrepreneurial efforts.

Proof of concept and colleague connection
During the competition, Joris and a product developer developed an initial proof of concept. Shortly after, his friend Andrew Grimminck joined the company as its first team member.

Winning the Rabo Entrepreneurship Award, completing the proof of concept, and Andrew joining the company accelerated Bypoint's plans. Extensive additional research was conducted, discussions were held about potential partnerships, and plans were finalized.

Cooperation

Collaboration with the Province of Drenthe: To strengthen each other, Bypoint has launched a partnership with the Province of Drenthe. Bypoint aims to work with the Province to contribute to a safer cycling environment in Drenthe.

Funding secured with Boost-Up: The company then contacted the Boost-Up foundation. Boost-Up guided Bypoint in securing the necessary investment and developing a plan. Ultimately, the investment was secured with the Boost-Up foundation's business partners and a group of investors from Assen.
